Ayurveda also provides lifestyle tips to prevent diseases before they happen to you.

According to a report published recently, we are using our eyes much more than ever before. This has happened because of mobile phones and the internet.

The rays coming from these devices harm our eyes and that’s why most people are suffering from weak eyes a lot.

I am pretty much sure that if you follow these tips, they won’t only help you keep your eyes healthy but also they will help you improve your eyesight.

Let’s start.

1. What Are Ayurvedic Eye Care Tips?

Many people get confused between home remedies and tips. They consider both of them the same but they are not. Home remedies are generally used to cure any disease and not prevent it.

The tips discussed here are basically practiced to prevent any eye disease and keep your eyes healthy.

So, if you are suffering from any kind of eye disease then you should look for Ayurvedic home remedies and not the ayurvedic eye care tips.

These tips will help you maintain the health of your normal eyes. They may also improve your eyesight.

2. How to Practice These Ayurvedic Eye Care Tips?

Well, these tips are so inclusive that you don’t have to spare a lot of time to practice them. You can easily practice them in your daily routine.

Even I can say that these tips are just the enhanced and improved version of your daily routine. So, don’t worry about your daily routine.

But yes, if you want extremely good results then you have to practice them regularly.

3. Ayurvedic Tips to Take Care of Your Eyes

The eye hospitals are full of patients with cataracts, macular degeneration, refractive errors, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, etc.

The treatments of such diseases are very expensive as well as they disturb our daily routine. So it is better to take care of the eyes before they got affected by any diseases.

Let’s go through these amazing and most effective ayurvedic eye care tips one by one.

1) Splash Your Eyes With Cold Water Early in the Morning

In the previous article “15 Daily Rituals for Extremely Good Health”, we discussed that the first work that you should do after waking up is to wash your hands properly with soap.

Splashing your eyes with cold water should be the next work that you should do right after washing your hands.

For a complete eyewash, first, fill your mouth with water as it will expand the eye muscles properly, and then splash cold water on the eyes a few times.

It will provide instant refreshment and cooling to your eyes.

This practice helps you clear the dried mucous and dirt accumulated in the eyes. It also helps in keeping the oils and fats that comprise the eyes solid and stable.

Here, please note that you should never apply hot, warm, or icy water to your eyes. Always use normal cold water.

2) Wash Your Eyes With Cold Water Often in a Day

It is very good to wash your eyes early in the morning but it should not be your last eyewash of the day.

You should keep washing your eyes often a day. It is because whenever we see any object, the photons emitted from that object enter our eyes.

These photons heat the eyes. The eyes are just the extension of the fat blobs and fat tissues are very sensitive to heat.

So, to cool down our eyes we should wash our eyes often a day.

The best way to wash your eyes often is to wash them whenever you go to the washroom or stand up to drink water.

3) Offer Water to the Early Morning Sun

According to a book named “Traditions & Customs of Hinduism”, offering water to the sun is an ancient practice that has lots of health benefits.

This is also beneficial for the health of your eyes.

Fill a Kalash (one type of copper vessel) with water. Now offer this water to the sun and look at the sun through the falling water.

The rays coming from the water are very much beneficial for your eyes. This practice should be done only in the early morning and never after 9:00 am.

4) Regularly Massage Your Head

Head massage involves rubbing and pressing the head points which helps a lot in keeping your eyes healthy.

It also improves blood circulation through the eyes, relaxes pressure in the eyes, improves vision, broadens the field of vision, and reduces dark circles under the eyes.

The rubbing of particular points on the head also improves the blood circulation in the scalps, strengthens hairs, and stimulates hair growth.

5) Rosewater Wash Can Help

You have to practice it after washing your eyes early in the morning. For this, you will need an eyewash cup.

Fill half of the eyewash cup with rose water and half of the eyewash cup with normal clean water.

Place an eyewash cup firmly on any of the eyes.

Open your eyes so that rose water touches your eye and rotate your pupil in all directions so that water gets circulated through the eyes properly.

Repeat the same process for another eye but don’t use the same liquid. Throw the previously used liquid and fill the new one.

Rosewater is anti-inflammatory in nature, so it can also help with the symptoms of inflammatory eye disorders like conjunctivitis (also known as pink eyes).

6) Palming The Eyes Can Benefit You a Lot

Rub the palms of your hands together rapidly for 10 seconds and put them over your eyes. Don’t put any pressure on your eyes just touch your hands to your eyes.

You should perform the palming early in the morning to increase the energy flow throughout your body.

If you are working on the screen all day then you should practice it after every 30-45 minutes.

It is because the warmth produced after rubbing the palms when applied to the eyes, relaxes all the muscles around your eyes and it also increases the blood flow through the eyes.

7) Press Acupressure Points Around The Eyes

Though Ayurveda and acupressure both are different they can also be practiced with each other.

Acupressure can also be useful to treat poor vision. To learn the acupressure technique for eyesight we need a separate article. But here we will have some glimpse of it.

In acupressure, we use our fingers to press acupressure nodes on our skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities.

Eye Accupressure Points

When these nodes are stimulated, blood circulation to that part increases, and muscles get relaxed.

The main advantage of this technique is you just need your hands and you can do it anytime and anywhere.

The points shown in the above image have special functions. When they are stimulated, the blood circulation through the eyes increases.

These nodes can be stimulated by massaging them using the thumb or index finger, microcurrent Stimulation, and essential oil application.

8) Blink More Often

According to Ayurveda, the eyes are considered the seat of pitta dosha and need proper care, cooling and lubrication regularly.

If you blink less than normal then there is a chance that your eyes can face issues related to eye strain.

Blinking more often can help you with this problem. When you blink more, your eyes automatically get lubricated.

If you can spare some time in a day then you can also practice the blinking exercises.

Method :

  • Blink quickly for 6-10 times
  • Then close your eyes
  • Again blink quickly 10-20 times
  • Then again close your eyes for a few seconds

This exercise is independent of time and place. You can perform it anywhere and anytime.

There is a variant of this exercise in which you close one of your eyes and start blinking the other one quickly.

9) Consume Eye Nourishing Foods

There are several foods when eaten on regular basis can benefit a lot in improving eye health.

Such foods are Indian gooseberry, green gram, and A2 cow ghee that you should include in your regular diet.

You should also include carrot, fennel seeds, fish, sweet potatoes, citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, raw red pepper, pomegranate, etc.

According to modern science, you should consume foods that are rich in vitamin A, C, E, B, zinc, selenium, carotenoids, and omega 3 fatty acids.

Among these amazing foods, I will recommend you to consume Indian gooseberry if you really want to take care of your eyes.

It is a medically proven fruit that has the ability to improve and preserve your eyesight as well as it can also prevent cataracts.

10) Massage Over The Soles of Your Feet

In Ayurveda, massaging the soles of the feet is very much praised because there are several nerves in the legs that directly connect the leg to the eyes.

If these nerves are stimulated through massage, it can improve and preserve the health of the eyes.

In Ayurveda, the process of gentle and sensitive foot massage with herbal oil or ghee with soft circular motions is also known as “Padabhyang”.

You can use ghee or any cold-pressed oil such as mustard oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, almond oil, etc for massaging your soles because they all calm down the entire nervous system.

11) Calm Your Eyes Down

After passing the long hours in front of the screen our eyes get dried and strained. To get rid of the evil effects of screens we need to calm our eyes down.

We have three ways to do so.

The first is to put a slice of cucumber on each of the eyes. The second is to soak the cotton balls in pure rose water and put it on the eyes.

The third is to soak the cotton balls in goat’s milk and put them on your eyes. Goat milk can provide you relief from eye strain.

12) Apply Ghee to Your Eyes 2-3 Times a Week

Ghee has cooling effects that’s why it is used to improve eye health. Put a few drops of A2 ghee in each of the eyes before sleeping.

Ghee has the same fats that we need for our cells and tissues to work properly.

You can practice it all seven days a week but if you are not comfortable with it, try to do it at least 2-3 times a week.

13) Apply Honey to Your Eyes Once a Month

Honey has a great cleansing property. It can literally digest the toxins present in the eyes.

Honey has scraping properties to remove grime and oil but it does this process gently.

If you are going to try it for the first time then you have to take great care. It is because, within 10 seconds of putting honey in the eyes, burning and ache will occur.

This burning sensation will remain for a few seconds. You will be able to feel the heat emerging from the eyes.

Then heavy tears will come out of the eyes and then you will feel fresh, light, and clean.

The best way to do this is mentioned in a book named “Everyday Ayurveda” in which the author says that you should place one drop of clean honey on a clean finger pad and then guide your finger towards the eye.

(Note: Here you have to make sure that the honey you use for this practice must be 100% pure)

14) Practice Trataka At least Once a Week

Trataka means to watch anything fixedly or concentrate on a single point.

How to do it?

Here are the steps.

  • Fix your sight on a non-moving object and try to hold your sight for a minute or more
  • As the time passes, your eyes will want you to close them but keep them open
  • As they begin to water, gently close them and allow the heat to release with tears

In Ayurveda, trataka is praised very much. It also mentions staring at the sun touching the horizon.

As it leaves the horizon then you should not practice trataka otherwise it can harm your eyes.

Instead, you can stare at a ghee lamp.

15) Other Ayurvedic Eye Care Tips

1) Put two or three drops of the eucalyptus oil or menthol crystal in the boiling water. Cover your head with a towel and let vapor strike your face and keep blinking.

2) Darken your room completely while sleeping.

3) Avoid sleeping in the daytime.

4) Put cotton pads soaked with cold water on your eyes.

5) To ensure clear eyesight, massage your feet with ginger oil regularly.

6) Bath with cold or warm water. Avoid bathing with hot water as hot water on the head decreases eyesight. ( Due to circulatory disturbance)

7) Avoid excess consumption of alcohol

8) While washing your face, fill your mouth with water and then splash water on the face. This will expand your eye muscles more. And your eyes will get clean.

9) Massage your head with medicated oils.

10) Walking on irregular surfaces can also weaken your eyes.

11) Use an umbrella to avoid excessive heat, dust, and light.

12) Have sound sleep because the eyes regain their functional capacity while sleeping.

13) Drink carrot juice, Indian gooseberry juice, spinach juice more.

14) Practice Bhramari pranayama regularly.

15) Walk on the grass and try to see greenery once in a day
